Why I big chopped my hair...

Hey Curlfriends!

I wanted to share with you all  how my big chop journey has been!
This post is an honest and transparent post for anyone considering the big chop or anyone who just wants to know how my journey was!
I get many questions from clients who consider big chopping and I tell them from my experience that it totally sucked! (But if your sold out on big chopping do you boo!)

When I decided to chop my hair off it was all over one color of magenta and everyone loved it! The color was definitely eye-catching.
But what the public doesn't know is that detangling is a nightmare, when my hair was wet it looked and felt damaged.

The reason why I decided to big chop my hair was because I just wanted to see my natural curls and natural color.
Although I've been natural for five years I've been coloring it since middle school days so I've never seen my "virgin" curls.

So on May 12, 2017 I decided to do my own big chop! I cut my hair into this curly pixie style that I've always wanted since high school. But I was never brave enough to do it.
The top of my hair is much curlier than the sides, so I was able to finger wave the sides down with some gel! The sides basically aren't curly enough to just wear out. It didn't look cute lol.

During the first month it was cute and all, but then when I got tired of restyling my hair DAILY! Reality kicked in and I realized couldn't just throw my hair up in a bun. I just had to restyle my curls and wear a hair wrap to disguise the sides that were growing in quick and go to work.
I did not really sit and consider how the grow out process would be. And I didn't think about the fact that I have a big head lol.
By the next month it was growing in and it looked weird with the top being much longer and the sides being much shorter. Over the next few months I had a love-hate relationship with my hair. Some days I got it to look cute if I put a bunch of bobby pins in it. And other days I looked like a boy! I look back and laugh, but it was a really hard time for me! Here's some photos of the grow out process! Again it sucked. And it doesn't help that my hair is wavy on the sides and super curly on top so it looked like all types of curl patterns were growing in!

This is the hair wrap that I would wear almost every day to work!

But now THANK GOD my hair is at a length that I love. I've been sharing my journey to everyone. In hopes that the next person who considers big chopping really evaluates their current regimen and understands its work to maintain!
I love how silky soft my natural curls are now when I detangle. One of the new things I've run into is that my hair is excessively dry-- not just from lack of products. My hair feels like wool in some places. I've learned that my hair doesn't absorb water as well as my colored hair did.
I'm also experimenting to see which products works best and which don't! Currently my favorite product combination is AG haircare Recoil Curl Activator as my leave in conditioner and Mizani Perfect Coil Oil Gel on top! Love this combo!!!
Here is a photo of my most recent curls on day 2 hair, no refreshing ever...

Thanks for reading how my big chop journey went!
Blessings,
